Former U.S. President Joe Biden Diagnosed With 'Aggressive' Prostate Cancer

Former U.S. President Joe Biden has been diagnosed with an aggressive form of prostate cancer that has spread to his bones, his office announced on Sunday. The 82-year-old was diagnosed on May 16 after experiencing urinary symptoms, leading doctors to discover a prostate nodule. His family is currently reviewing treatment options with medical experts.

A statement from Biden’s office confirmed that while the cancer is aggressive, it appears to be hormone-sensitive, which allows for effective management. Prostate cancer is the most common form of cancer in men, with one in eight men in the United States being diagnosed in their lifetime. Although highly treatable if detected early, it remains the second leading cause of cancer-related deaths among men.

Political and Public Reactions

Following the announcement, U.S. President Donald Trump expressed his support for Biden, stating, "We extend our warmest and best wishes to Jill and the family, and we wish Joe a fast and successful recovery." Vice President Kamala Harris also voiced her encouragement, saying, "Joe is a fighter, and I know he will face this challenge with the same strength, resilience, and optimism that have always defined his life and leadership".

Former President Barack Obama praised Biden’s longstanding commitment to cancer research, referencing his leadership in the Cancer Moonshot initiative, which aims to reduce cancer-related deaths by 50% over the next 25 years. Obama stated, "Nobody has done more to find breakthrough treatments for cancer in all its forms than Joe, and I am certain he will fight this challenge with his trademark resolve and grace".

Medical Outlook and Next Steps

Biden’s cancer has been classified with a Gleason score of 9, indicating a high-grade and fast-spreading form of the disease. Hormone therapy is a common treatment for prostate cancer, helping to shrink tumors and slow progression, though it is not a cure. Experts suggest that if Biden responds well to treatment, he could manage the disease for years.

As Biden and his family weigh their options, the public and political figures continue to rally around him, offering support and encouragement. His diagnosis comes nearly a year after he withdrew from the 2024 presidential race, following concerns about his health and age. Despite stepping away from politics, Biden remains a significant figure in American leadership and advocacy.

The coming weeks will be crucial in determining his treatment plan and prognosis. For now, the former president faces a challenging battle, but with the backing of his family, medical experts, and supporters, he remains hopeful for a positive outcome.
