Sony Terminates Jim Thornton After a Workplace Investigation, Not a Verdict

Employment law and criminal law parted ways on Friday. Sony Pictures Television told TMZ it had terminated Jim Thornton, the Wheel of Fortune announcer, after what it called a thorough investigation. The spark was a May American Airlines flight and a passenger report about material on a laptop.

Court Magazine will not reprint the alleged messages. A passenger complaint, a crew intervention, a police contact, a suspension, and a firing are the public steps. None of those steps is a conviction. Sony's statement is an employer decision under a family-hour brand.

Why the distinction matters

Readers mix HR outcomes with indictments. They are different forums, different burdens, different remedies. If a prosecutor files, the caption will be the story. Until then, the caption is a termination.
