White House Says It Will Lift a 10% Tariff on Irish Whiskey

A narrow carve-out

President Donald Trump said he plans to lift a 10% tariff on Irish whiskey, telling reporters that everybody has been asking about it, including Irish Prime Minister Micheal Martin. He framed the decision as a courtesy to a friendly government and to distillers on both sides of the Atlantic.

The change, if formalized, would be a product-specific exception rather than a rewrite of the wider tariff schedule.

Politics in a glass

Irish-American voters and the drinks trade have lobbied for months. Dublin has treated whiskey as a symbol of a larger trade conversation with Washington. Lifting one levy does not settle that conversation.

What still has to happen

A presidential remark is not the same as a customs notice. Importers will wait for the Federal Register text. Until it posts, the 10% line remains the working rule at the border.
